Coroner's Office Internship

East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office

About this Experience

When

Set up for Summer 2024

Observed on May 23, 2024

Responsibilities

- Observe the autopsy

- Ask questions

What I learned

I learned what real organs look like and how to find the structures of the organ. I learned the steps that are taken during an autopsy and what jobs each person has to make it go smoothly and quickly.

Put On Pause

As summer was approaching, I reached out to the coroner's office to solidify my internship. Everything was on track until I received an email stating the internship was on hold and would be revisited later. I was, however, granted the opportunity to observe one autopsy. I took them up on the opportunity. The medical examiner allowed me to hold each organ as they examined them. I held a heart in my hands and looked into the aorta. I held a brain, which is heavier than expected, in my hands as well, which was a grounding experience. I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to observe and participate in an autopsy.
