What I Learned
I have learned about all the different types of instruments used during surgeries and how each surgeon willl preform the same surgery in their own unique way. I have been able to scrub into surgeries and ask questions about what the doctor is seeing and how it infuluences the next steps. After building a rapport with doctors, I am asked for by name to scrub in and assit in surgeries.
Learning on the Job
I have already learned so much in my one month of working in this position and I continue to learn more each shift. So far, I have seen amputations, bowel resections, thyroidectomies, mandible reconstructions and so much more. Each day I go in and see something new. I am constantly asking questions and learning from each member of the team: CRNAs, nurses, scrub technicians, physician assistants, medical students, and doctors. Some of the scrub technicians or physician assistants have come to know my habit for asking questions about the surgery and will fill me in on what is happening and where the surgeon and residents are in the procedure. I love getting up and going to work since I know I will be learning something new and solidifying my interest and pathway into the medical field to become a doctor.
